SUMMARY:Quality of Life Design Awards - Celebration
DESCRIPTION:For over 40 years\, the Quality-of-Life Design Awards has been the signature event of our chapter—an event held every other year that goes far beyond the presentation of awards. It’s a time for our community to come together in celebration of our profession\, our students\, our Fellows\, and all who contribute to the field of landscape architecture. \nThis year began in unimaginable ways\, with the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January impacting many of our members\, friends\, and colleagues. Yet\, as landscape architects\, we have always responded with unity and resilience—just as we did after the Northridge Earthquake in 1996 and again following 9/11. \nPlease join us for this meaningful evening under the stars on the Water Court Plaza at the Omni Hotel Los Angeles. \nREGISTER HERE \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:ASLA SoCal Emerging Professionals Committee March Meet-Up + Site Walk @ Isla Intersections + Annenberg Paseo
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday March 16th\, 2024 for an in-person ASLA SoCal Emerging Professional Meet-Up and Site Tour of Isla Intersections and the Annenberg Paseo with Agency Artifact. \nRegistration (and a hard hat) are required\, and limited to 20 emerging professional ASLA members (Student ASLA\, Associate ASLA\, and emerging ASLA members) so make sure to register soon to reserve your spot! Non-members\, and non-emerging professionals are kindly asked to not register for this event (membership will be verified). \nOur site walk and project tour will be led by Christopher Esteban Torres\, Founding Principal of landscape architecture firm Agency Artifact\, along with members of the Agency Artifact team\, and the project’s developer Holos Communities. Isla de Los Angeles Housing and Annenberg Paseo\, is the first ‘shared street’ built in the City of Los Angeles. The project will serve as a model of how to redesign streets across the city. The streetscape redesign is in conjunction with a transformative new permanent supportive housing development that reinvests in South Los Angeles and builds community at one of the busiest freeway intersections in the world (the 110 FWY and 105 FWY interchange). The project is transforming a city-owned property at 283 W. Imperial Highway\, providing apartments for individuals who have experienced homelessness (designed by LOHA/Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects). The landscape creates a ‘living lung’ forest with over 50 trees being planted to create a filter that will sequester toxins from the freeway. A series of pocket parks\, gardens and plazas create a new pedestrian oriented network of open spaces for the building residents and surrounding community. \nREGISTRATION \nPlease arrive on time – the site tour will start promptly at 10am! \nStreet Parking is available in the surrounding area. The project is located at the Intersection of Broadway + W Imperial Hwy\, Los Angeles\, CA (283 W Imperial Hwy\, Los Angeles\, CA 90061). \n

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Women from Cal Poly Pomona Landscape Architecture
DESCRIPTION:As part of Cal Poly Pomona Department of Landscape Architecture’s 60th Anniversary celebrations\, the department is pleased to host a screening of the documentary “Ruth Shellhorn: Midcentury Landscape Design in Southern California.” The documentary will be followed by a short presentation on Shellhorn’s work and a panel discussion moderated by Kelly Comras\, landscape architect and CPPLA alumna. \nRuth Shellhorn’s influence in the field of landscape architecture cannot be overstated. During World War II she worked on the Shoreline Development Study\, which established restrictions on oil drilling in Santa Monica Bay and informed the goals of the California Coastal Act. Her many works include such iconic examples as Bullock’s department stores and Fashion Square shopping centers\, the University of California-Riverside\, and perhaps her most well-known commission\, a major contribution to the landscape design for Disneyland. \nThe panelists for our post-screening discussion represent 40 years of CPPLA alumnae: Sara Abed\, Jennifer Birkeland\, Natasha Harkison\, Tori Kjer\, Kiku Kurahashi\, and Eileen Takata. The panel will examine the evolving role of women in landscape architecture and highlight the contributions of decades of CPPLA alumnae. The Ruth Shellhorn Scholarship winners for 2016\, Amanda Flores and Dwen-Dwen Wang\, will share their perspectives as current seniors in the program. Immediately following the screening and discussion there will be a cake cutting\, and a book signing with author Kelly Comras. \nImmediately following the screening and discussion\, there will be a reception and book signing with author Kelly Comras. \n6:00 pm – Doors open\, light reception\n6:30 pm – Program begins\n8:00 pm – CPPLA 60th Anniversary Cake! \nSpecial thanks to CPPLA’s generous Sponsors:\nBob Perry\, USC\nEPTDESIGN\nSALT Landscape Architects\nScott Horsley + Associates\nand\nCalvin Abe and Linda Daley\, Ahbe\nMike Boucher\, EPTDESIGN\nBob Cardoza\, NUVIS\nPamela Galera\, City of Anaheim\nGlenn Matsui\, Cal Poly Pomona\nKen Nakaba\, Cal Poly Pomona\nJim Pickel\, UCLA Extension\nMeagan Yellot\, Brightview
