SUMMARY:How Current Events Impact our Practice
DESCRIPTION:What just Happened? A recap of 2020 and how it impacted us in a positive way. \nPhew 2020 is over\, but certainly not without impact. As we look back over the past year\, we realized we’ve had to re-think our practice through a variety of lenses. Albeit somewhat off the fly\, this re-thinking isn’t all bad – COVID made us re-think how we work\, how we collaborate\, and how we communicate. The disruption to the economy\, combined with continued devastation from natural disasters/ large storm events has made us re-think the types of services landscape architects can provide. Please join us in a panel discussion around today’s current events and how the practice of landscape architecture can and should evolve. \nBrightView Design Group (BVDG)\, is the creative center of BrightView\, the largest landscape services company in the county.  Our small design team\, 60 individuals strong\, is composed of landscape planners\, architects\, environmentalists\, arborists\, horticulturists\, landscape contractors\, and estimators who are recognized for their expert knowledge of all things landscape related.  Our design portfolio is extensive. It crosses both the public and private sectors\, and demonstrates that we’re a dedicated team with a proven record of professional commitment to improving and caring for our outdoor resources. \nLeading this discussion will be Megan Horn\, one of our Principals. Megan will introduce a series of topics and highlight changes we’ve faced over the last year and facilitate conservations with BVDG staff and call participants. Topics will range from staffing adjustment and workflow\, to our WFH response\, to ways landscape architects can contribute to beyond our traditional design services.  And if there’s time\, we’d love to have a group brainstorming discussion on how\, we as an industry\, can come together to have greater impact and what we’ve learned over the past year. \nRegister Here \n  \n

SUMMARY:ASLA Student Chapters - Virtual Office Visit
DESCRIPTION:The UCLAX ASLA Student Chapter is pleased to announce a virtual office visit with Terremoto Landscape Architects on Tuesday\, February 2nd\, from 5-6 pm. We will be joined by founders David Godshall and Alain Peauroi\, as well as Principal Jenny Jones. Terremoto Landscape Architects is a California-based design studio with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Through the exploration of form and challenging of historical and contemporary conventions\, the firm responds to each site’s unique opportunities and constraints. Their design approach has been described as “post-internet\, critically-regionalist\, and respectfully inflammatory.” \nOur virtual firm visit will delve into their philosophies towards residential and public projects then we will follow with a brief Q & A session. Please send questions to your SCASLA board in advance. \nDon’t forget to peruse the website beforehand! http://terremoto.la/\nExplore provocative projects such as Forest Paths or Manolo Court/R.M. Schindler vs. Terremoto. \nTheir residential projects like Nicasio and Westerly Terrace are splendid. Public spaces such as Platform Park and Garden Hall Elementary School are also worth examining. \nThis is the second joint program of the four So Cal SCASLA Chapters. Please join fellow students from Cal Poly Pomona\, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo\, USC and UCLA Extension. \nRegister Here \n

SUMMARY:Key Aspects of Pedestrian & Pathway Lighting for Landscape Architects
DESCRIPTION:Presenters\, Niki Brice and Mary Kay Shaefer from DSA Lighting will cover key lighting characteristics and aspects of lighting design to consider when selecting lighting for pedestrian spaces and pathways. This will help Landscape Architects better understand what to look for in lighting while making selections that compliment their designs. \nMary Kay is an outside sales team member for David Silverman & Associates (DSA).  She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design at California State University\, San Jose\, before working in many areas of the industry – design\, real estate\, and architectural and design product education and sales.  She is a LEED AP ID+C.  Mary Kay has extensive experience\, more than 20 years\, working with architects\, landscape architects\, designers\, and end-users\, bringing her knowledge\, creativity\, and positive perspective to each project. She is a team player who successfully collaborates with clients and manufacturing partners to identify appropriate products and materials to meet design concepts. She strives to find outstanding solutions for projects\, resulting in positive customer experiences. \nNiki began her career in commercial electrical administration and project management; although her education and interests are focused in the areas of graphic design\, fine art\, interior design\, and architecture. The design build projects requiring extensive coordination with architects\, lighting designers and engineers stimulated her passion for lighting & site furnishings. She holds the position of Secretary on the Orange County Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society. Niki is now a sales representative with David Silverman & Associates; an independent agent specialized in representing architectural lighting and site amenities from the finest manufacturers in the world. She is pleased to support the Greater Los Angeles Area market in transforming places and spaces for an ideal human experience. \n  \nRegister Here \n
