SUMMARY:UC Landscape Plant Irrigation Trials
DESCRIPTION:UC LPITTM evaluates plants for low water-use over 2 years. We irrigate plants regularly during the first summer after planting\, then assess performance during the second growing season on three irrigation treatments corresponding to the Water Use Classification of Landscape Species (WUCOLS) levels of Low\, Moderate\, and High. Growth and quality ratings are collected by researchers during this period. The Open House allows landscape and horticultural industry professionals and educators the opportunity to see these new offerings and share with us your opinions and preferences by rating a representative sample of the plants in the field. See what it’s all about here: https://www.facebook.com/UCLPIT/. \nThis trials site is located at 7601 Irvine Blvd\, Irvine\, at UC ANR’s South Coast Research & Extension Center – event parking is free. A reminder email will be sent to you a week before the event. Participation will entail recording your quality ratings for one individual per treatment for each species/cultivar\, providing you the opportunity to evaluate the performance of each species across all treatments without rating every plant in the field. \nThe ratings take roughly 60-100 minutes to complete and participants may arrive any time between 8:00 and 11:00 am. The event is free\, but space is limited\, so you must register by filling out the survey located at: http://ucanr.edu/SpringRatingsSocal. Participation is voluntary and is open to professionals\, academics/educators\, garden writers\, and UC Master Gardeners. If you have any questions please contact gejohnson@ucanr.edu copy jasisneroz@ucdavis.edu. \nImportant Details: Participants should wear sturdy\, comfortable shoes\, as the fields are packed dirt. You may also want to pack sunscreen and wear a hat\, as the plants are in full sun. Carpooling is encouraged\, but not required. A tram running every approximately every 15 minutes will take you from the parking lot to the actual trial location. At the trial site\, you will be provided a ratings sheet\, writing implement and given general instructions when you arrive. Cold water will be provided. We hope to see you there! \nView Full Announcement Here \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Midcentury Modern Campus of UC Riverside
DESCRIPTION:Some of the best designers of the midcentury era are already well-known for their residential commissions. But many\, such as architects Albert Frey and landscape architects Fred Barlow and Ruth Shellhorn\, included campus planning and design as an important element of their oeuvre. Developed in the post-war period of phenomenal growth and optimism\, U C Riverside was the first University of California campus to be planned using modernist design principles and vocabulary. Core elements of the original UCR site plan and architecture have been preserved and continue to exert a significant influence on the continuing development of the campus. \nPresented by Kelly Comras\, FASLA with\nJacqueline Norman\, UCR Campus Architect and\nRamasubramanian Umashankar\, UCR Principal Physical Planner \nA reception and opening of the photographic exhibition will follow the lecture.\nUCR Palm Desert Main Theater\, Building B\n75080 Frank Sinatra Drive\, Palm Desert\, CA 92211 \nTickets are free. SUMMARY:Designing the Disneyland Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Walt Disney hired landscape architect Ruth Shellhorn in March 1955 to coordinate landscape plans between Disney’s office\, WED Enterprises\, and the crews at the construction site at Disneyland. By the time Disneyland opened on July 17\, Shellhorn had created detailed design plans for the front entrance\, Town Square\, Main Street and the Plaza Hub\, as well as a pedestrian plan for the entire park. Extraordinary plantings and installation\, supervised by Jack and Bill Evans\, helped make Disneyland “the happiest place on earth.” \nThis presentation and a short documentary film will take place in Walt Disney Hall at the legendary Smoke Tree Ranch. A rare chance to personally experience the beauty and solitude of this very private enclave. Walt was a ‘colonist’\, the moniker used by Smoke Tree Ranch residents. As a gift to his fellow colonists\, Walt funded the Walt Disney Hall\, which sits adjacent to the beautiful pool and the Ranch House\, the very center of Smoke Tree life. \nArrive to a beautiful pool setting and enjoy a full bar and delicious hors d’oeuvres created by the Ranch chefs. As twilight falls\, guests will be ushered into Disney Hall for the presentation.\nDisney Hall at Smoke Tree Ranch\, 1850 Smoke Tree Lane\, Palm Springs\, CA 92264 \nCo-sponsored by the California Garden & Landscape History Society (cglhs.org)\nTickets are $125. SUMMARY:MacArthur Park Landscape and Engineering Charrette (12/14\, 12/21\, 1/11)
DESCRIPTION:LASAN and Watershed Protection Program have issued a holiday landscape challenge\,\nand as lead of the new Livability\, Viability\, and Equity (LiVE) landscape group and I am\neager to oblige. \nYour work and academic programs have inspired the admiration and recognition of the\nCity\, LASAN\, and its executive management to the degree they have requested a\nlandscape and engineering charrette for MacArthur Park. The significant site\, formerly\ncalled Westlake\, was meant to become the “Central Park” of Los Angeles. Today\, as parks\nexist alongside water quality projects\, this merits our most Olympian efforts and vision.\nYou and your select teams of landscape architects and recruits (engineers\, architects\,\nscientists\, or others) are being asked to produce a summary narrative that supports your\nconceptual site layout\, as justified by goals of biodiversity\, landscape potential and more\nthoughtful and coherent water uses. \nIf we could also find a special forces “Water Team” to produce a poster as a forward for\nall teams\, this will contribute to the professional end products. It should find an\nabundance of information online to summarize state to local water and energy contexts. It\nwill use the charrette process to present consensus based\, site-scaled objectives of all\nteams. Along with biodiversity goals\, this water information should be a baseline for all\npresentations. If this does not happen through a special team\, we will cover it elsewhere\nas I have planned all three meetings to be fun\, productive and successful however few or\nmany show up over this busy season.\nYour teams will demonstrate their unique skills alongside disciplines with common\nstormwater (GI) and landscape goals to build upon lessons of nature\, experience\, and\neach other. This path is a scientifically proven philosophy that reduces entropy\,\norganizes\, and breeds design evolution. Through collaboration\, coaching and dedicated\nstudents\, a future of increasingly technological and nature based projects rooted in\nlandscape architecture can lead to regulatory projects\, as they enhance ecological\,\neconomic and social benefits.\nAm hoping you are still available for this first event. If not\, we are also planning\narchitectural\, and engineering focused charrettes\, and a PALAPA III of architects\,\nengineers\, and planners this summer. LiVE will continue to welcome you and your top\nstudents in the delivery of stormwater implementation for parks\, transportation\, water\nsupply\, water quality\, and flood control.\nLASAN also extends the invitation to any other academic institutions\, or leaders you\nrecommend and wish to submit a team. In this overbooked season\, we welcome team\nrosters by December 07\, 2018. \nSchedule attached Here \nTeam Roster Template
