SUMMARY:Women in Green Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion on social justice at the Los Angeles Women in Green Breakfast \nSince November\, new fault lines have emerged around a wide range of issues\, ranging from labor and development to immigration and healthcare\, civil liberties\, immigration\, climate change and women’s rights. Many of these issues impact women in the green arena both personally and professionally.\nWomen in the green building movement care about making the world a better place. But what does that really mean and how can we join a broader “movement of movements”? Where are opportunities for us to take the lead\, and how can we be good allies to communities that are on the front lines? \nJoin us as we begin to explore these complex questions with leaders from the LA community in the areas of labor\, law and social equity. Hear about the communities they serve\, the greatest needs they have\, their greatest sources of hope\, and how women in green can play a role. \nSponsorship opportunities available HEREFeaturing Panelists: \nJackie Cornejo\nSouthern Region Equitable Development Strategist\nPartnership for Working Families \nShane Murphy Goldsmith\nPresident and CEO\nLiberty Hill Foundation \nJennie Pasquarella\nDirector of Immigrants Rights\, ACLU of California and\nSenior Staff Attorney\, ACLU of Southern California \nModerated by: Heather Rosenberg\, Director Building Resilience- Los Angeles

SUMMARY:HALS (Historic American Landscape Survey) training at the lovely Virginia Robinson Gardens
DESCRIPTION:What is HALS? \nHALS is the academic record of historically significant American landscapes. The HALS mission is to record historic landscapes through measured drawings and interpretative drawings\, written histories and large format black and white photographs and color photographs. HALS builds on the HABS and HAER documentation traditions\, while expanding the range of stories that can be told about human relationships with the land. HALS documents the dynamics of landscapes\, as HABS and HAER have documented unique building and engineering structures. \nWhat is a HALS Project? \nTo quote the HALS website:\n“Historic landscapes are special places. They are important touchstones of national\, regional\, and local identity. They foster a sense of community and place. Historic landscapes are also fragile places. They are affected by the forces of nature\, and by commercial and residential development\, vandalism and neglect. They undergo changes that are often unpredictable and irreversible. For these reasons and for the benefit of future generations\, it is important to document these places. Historic landscapes vary in size from small gardens to several thousand-acre national parks. In character\, they range from designed to vernacular\, rural to urban\, and agricultural to industrial spaces. Vegetable patches\, estate gardens\, cemeteries\, farms\, quarries\, nuclear test sites\, suburbs\, and abandoned settlements all may be considered historic landscapes.” \nMore information on HALS can be found at https://www.nps.gov/hdp/hals/ \nWhat will HALS Training include? \nWe have the good fortune to learn about HALS at the lovely Virginia Robinson Gardens\, a 6-1/2 acre Mediterranean Classic Revival estate built in 1911\, jointly administered by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation and Friends of Robinson Gardens. The Estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the perfect setting for learning the tools to document a historic landscape. \nSpeakers will include Tim Lindsay\, Superintendent of the Virginia Robinson Gardens\, and Janet Gracyk\, Landscape Architect. \nTim Lindsey\, horticulturalist and estate manager\, will introduce us to the gardens\, their history and significance.\nJanet Gracyk is a landscape architect with an expertise on historical preservation and planning. She will lead the HALS training.\nThis program will provide you with the hands on tools to prepare a HALS documentation of a historic landscape\, and give you the resources for preparing HALS documentations on your own. We will be based in the pool pavilion for the morning\, and after lunch we will be in the gardens for hands on site inventory and analysis. \nCost: (Includes Lunch)\n$50 – Professionals (RESERVE HERE) \nDue to a generous sponsor who has come forward\, ASLA students may attend this training for free. However\, an RSVP is still needed. Students who want to attend should email: vphillipy@socal-asla.org \nStudents who have previously registered will be refunded and notified in writing by email.

SUMMARY:Renewing San Antonio's Brackenridge Park
DESCRIPTION:Mia Lehrer\, FASLA\, is proud to participate in the 2017 TCLF Summit Leading with Landscape III: Renewing San Antonio’s Brackenridge Park. In its third year\, the “Leading with Landscape series” has proven to be an exceptional conversation on urban landscape issues for planning and design professionals as well as the general public. Mia will present the LA River as a case study to help inform the planning process for Brackenridge Park. \nRegister today for the one-day conference on Friday\, March 3. \nOne of San Antonio’s most significant but least known cultural gems\, Brackenridge Park was one of the nation’s earliest municipal parks and the water source for the area’s world famous missions. The summit will explore how the park’s layers of history\, culture\, and ecology inform its future design and stewardship and what lessons other municipalities can learn from the San Antonio example. \nJoin public agencies\, planners\, landscape architects\, and the public for this summit where deep local knowledge meets national exemplars of planning and design to help create a future that balances the landscape’s complex natural\, historic\, cultural\, and ecological systems.\nFor more information on the summit\, please visit the following links: \nTCLF Facebook page\nTCLF Twitter page \nFor more info and summit registration

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Women from Cal Poly Pomona Landscape Architecture
DESCRIPTION:As part of Cal Poly Pomona Department of Landscape Architecture’s 60th Anniversary celebrations\, the department is pleased to host a screening of the documentary “Ruth Shellhorn: Midcentury Landscape Design in Southern California.” The documentary will be followed by a short presentation on Shellhorn’s work and a panel discussion moderated by Kelly Comras\, landscape architect and CPPLA alumna. \nRuth Shellhorn’s influence in the field of landscape architecture cannot be overstated. During World War II she worked on the Shoreline Development Study\, which established restrictions on oil drilling in Santa Monica Bay and informed the goals of the California Coastal Act. Her many works include such iconic examples as Bullock’s department stores and Fashion Square shopping centers\, the University of California-Riverside\, and perhaps her most well-known commission\, a major contribution to the landscape design for Disneyland. \nThe panelists for our post-screening discussion represent 40 years of CPPLA alumnae: Sara Abed\, Jennifer Birkeland\, Natasha Harkison\, Tori Kjer\, Kiku Kurahashi\, and Eileen Takata. The panel will examine the evolving role of women in landscape architecture and highlight the contributions of decades of CPPLA alumnae. The Ruth Shellhorn Scholarship winners for 2016\, Amanda Flores and Dwen-Dwen Wang\, will share their perspectives as current seniors in the program. Immediately following the screening and discussion there will be a cake cutting\, and a book signing with author Kelly Comras. \nImmediately following the screening and discussion\, there will be a reception and book signing with author Kelly Comras. \n6:00 pm – Doors open\, light reception\n6:30 pm – Program begins\n8:00 pm – CPPLA 60th Anniversary Cake! \nSpecial thanks to CPPLA’s generous Sponsors:\nBob Perry\, USC\nEPTDESIGN\nSALT Landscape Architects\nScott Horsley + Associates\nand\nCalvin Abe and Linda Daley\, Ahbe\nMike Boucher\, EPTDESIGN\nBob Cardoza\, NUVIS\nPamela Galera\, City of Anaheim\nGlenn Matsui\, Cal Poly Pomona\nKen Nakaba\, Cal Poly Pomona\nJim Pickel\, UCLA Extension\nMeagan Yellot\, Brightview
