DESCRIPTION:“Designing for Urban Flooding and Managing the Los Angeles River” \nWater\, water management\, and climate change accelerated urban flooding are of paramount import and concern to residents and decision makers in Southern California. The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) in partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) and the SWA Group are gathering leading industry\, non-profit\, and academic professionals for a daylong conference on Friday December 5\, 2025\, at USC’s Bovard Auditorium that will focus on landscape architecture’s leadership role in addressing critical water management issues. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Southern California chapter is a partner in education. \nThis event is part of the programming associated with the Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize\, a biennial honor with a $100\,000 award. The work of the current laureate\, the Beijing-based landscape architect Kongjian Yu\, which centers on the “sponge cities” concept for mitigating urban flooding\, is the impetus for this conference. As the Host Chapter\, SoCal ASLA will play a central role in shaping the conference experience\, and we invite you to join our kick-off meeting on December 18 to learn how you can get involved. \nDuring this meeting\, we’ll introduce the planning process\, highlight the various committees\, and share opportunities for leadership and volunteer participation. \nHost Chapter Planning Committees: \n\nHost Chapter Booth – Serve as the welcoming hub for attendees\, showcasing chapter programs\, sharing local knowledge\, and coordinating booth volunteers.\nWomen in Landscape Architecture (WILA) Walk – Help plan an accessible\, high-participation walk that starts and ends at the convention center.\nPublic Relations\, Communications & Marketing – Support press outreach\, social media\, brand messaging\, and coordinated marketing efforts to promote the conference.\nASLA Legacy Project – Partner with a local school to design a community-focused project that leaves a lasting impact on the host city.\nField Session Planning – Assist with identifying\, developing\, and coordinating high-quality field sessions submitted through the annual Call for Presentations.\nStudent Sketch Crawl – Work with local universities to plan a pre-conference student sketching experience that explores the city and builds community.\n\nWe hope you’ll join us and help shape an inspiring and memorable conference in 2026. \nThis is a member only webinar.
