A Conversation with Women from Cal Poly Pomona Landscape Architecture

Loading Events

As part of Cal Poly Pomona Department of Landscape Architecture’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, the department is pleased to host a screening of the documentary “Ruth Shellhorn: Midcentury Landscape Design in Southern California.” The documentary will be followed by a short presentation on Shellhorn’s work and a panel discussion moderated by Kelly Comras, landscape architect and CPPLA alumna.

Ruth Shellhorn’s influence in the field of landscape architecture cannot be overstated. During World War II she worked on the Shoreline Development Study, which established restrictions on oil drilling in Santa Monica Bay and informed the goals of the California Coastal Act. Her many works include such iconic examples as Bullock’s department stores and Fashion Square shopping centers, the University of California-Riverside, and perhaps her most well-known commission, a major contribution to the landscape design for Disneyland.

The panelists for our post-screening discussion represent 40 years of CPPLA alumnae: Sara Abed, Jennifer Birkeland, Natasha Harkison, Tori Kjer, Kiku Kurahashi, and Eileen Takata. The panel will examine the evolving role of women in landscape architecture and highlight the contributions of decades of CPPLA alumnae. The Ruth Shellhorn Scholarship winners for 2016, Amanda Flores and Dwen-Dwen Wang, will share their perspectives as current seniors in the program. Immediately following the screening and discussion there will be a cake cutting, and a book signing with author Kelly Comras.

Immediately following the screening and discussion, there will be a reception and book signing with author Kelly Comras.
