As your Southern California Chapter Liaison to Students, I would like to ask for your assistance in serving as a juror for our upcoming 2023 Student ASLA Honor and Merit Awards. We seek licensed landscape architects who are current ASLA Full or Fellow members willing to volunteer their time by participating in a student presentation event at one of the following universities:
(In person) CAL POLY SLO: Sunday March 19, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
(In person) CAL POLY POMONA: Friday, April 7, 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
(In person) USC: Saturday, May 6, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
(Zoom) UCLA: Saturday, Sept. 23, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
By serving as a juror to review student work, your time commitment is needed approximately between the hours noted above, which vary depending on the number of enrolled students at each university. The students are selected by faculty members. For in person juries, light snacks or lunch will be provided (this will be confirmed prior to your jury date).
A total of five professionals are needed for each jury and the final details will be provided once we confirm the jury members who will be participating. ASLA is committed to fostering equity and inclusion within our profession, membership, staff, and leadership, and as such would hope to have our jury reflect this commitment. Encouraging diversity involves celebrating difference based on gender, race, sexual orientation, sexual identity, culture, or identity. We would also like to achieve a mix of professionals with varied work experience – public, private, small scale, large scale, etc. If you have never volunteered with ASLA, please consider doing so. It’s a wonderful, fun and fulfilling way to assist the students and the Chapter; plus you get to collaborate with your fellow professionals, reconnect with old colleagues and meet new ones!
If you are interested in participating, please forward your contact information to Tricia O’Connell, Liaison to Students at toc828@gmail.com and indicate which date works best for you. Please also copy Vicki Phillipy, at executivedirector@socal-asla.org. We will then contact you directly with further information. Thank you again for your consideration in assisting our next generation of Landscape Architects.
