Each year, the So. Calif. Chapter of ASLA hosts, by invitation only, a unique field trip where students from each of our chapter universities (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona, USC and UCLA) have an opportunity to meet their student board counterparts while enjoying various tours including landscape architectural office visits, educational tours, and special award winning projects.
In celebration of World Landscape Architecture Month, this year’s field trip began with a private tour of the Las Virgenes Water District where we had a ‘pure water demonstration’ and discussed treatment and water re-use. We were also inspired by the Water District’s wonderful demonstration garden which highlighted climate appropriate landscaping including pollinator gardens, lawn alternatives, rain gardens and succulent gardens using native and drought-tolerant plants.
We then drove a few minutes away and met with Bryan Badgett – owner of Environmental Patterns (www.environmentalpatterns.com) and his team in Westlake Village for lunch and a chance to see some of their incredible high profile residential projects. We concluded our day with a raffle drawing for some fun giveaways and gift cards.
This year’s event took place on April 13, 2024 and was attended by 29 students and professionals including the SCC/ASLA President, President Elect, and Liaison to Students.
