Before we get involved in our holiday activities and say good-bye to 2020, the Chapter wants to update you on an important issue we know affects many of our members. ASLA is thinking about you.
Today, we were notified that our ASLA CEO, Torey Carter-Conneen, has written to the leadership in Washington concerning the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) as it relates to legislative action to address the tax treatment of loan forgiveness. ASLA is asking Congress to overrule Internal Revenue Service Notice 2020-32 that disallows businesses from claiming tax deductions for expenses paid with PPP loans.
If you are a firm that applied and received a PPP loan, NOW is the time to reach out to your legislative representative and ask them to overrule the IRS Notice 2020-32.
Even if you did not apply for a PPP loan, this has everything to do with equity. Please reach out to your legislative representative to remind them that these expenses are a stronger hit to our small businesses than to our large businesses. Many of our chapter landscape architecture firms are small businesses, including most of our minority owned firms.
Even if you are not an ASLA member, advocacy for the profession is a service ASLA provides for all landscape architects. We are a member driven organization and can only do this work with your support and membership. Please consider joining ASLA to strengthen these efforts.
A copy of the ASLA letter is attached here. Congress needs to act now so this does not affect the next tax filing season.
