Recently, ASLA joined with the Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) in advocating for the protection and preservation of the former Weyerhaeuser Corporate Headquarters. Designed in 1971 by Peter Walker of Sasaki, Walker and Associates in association with architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the Weyerhaeuser campus is considered to be one the most iconic corporate properties in our nation, revered for the building’s modernist architecture and the environmentally sensitive design of its landscape. The current owner of the property, the Los Angeles-based developer Industrial Realty Group, is planning to clearcut 132 forested acres to build a 1.5-million-square-foot warehouse space. The Cultural Landscape Foundation has started an advocacy campaign to prevent the clearcutting of the property and to present alternative design options for redevelopment of the space. The ASLA Washington Chapter, and other notable landscape architects and landscape historians have also weighed in to prevent the clearcutting of the campus.
