Dear Members,

Creating memorable and sustainable open spaces is more than design techniques of landscape architecture; it is about weaving stories that evolve dynamically, touching lives in unique ways. As we navigate the challenges of our time—global crises such as climate change, healthcare issues, geopolitical conflicts, and economic impacts—we, as landscape architects, find a profound sense of purpose. The open spaces we create aren’t static entities; they provide, thrive, and evolve graciously through the ebb and flow of time. It’s a privilege to be a part of this transformative profession.

As we conclude this year and prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, let’s take a moment to celebrate our chapter’s achievements in 2023. This includes the successful launch of the Climate Action Symposium, the bi-annual SoCal ASLA Quality of Life awards, a series of engaging monthly programs, and our dedicated connections with students. Notably, ASLA has been at the forefront of advocacy, tirelessly championing the protection of licensure, taking a leadership role in addressing climate challenges, and emphasizing equity, diversity, and inclusion in our day-to-day practices. It is a moment of pride for all of us as Landscape Architecture achieves STEM profession status for the first time!

Awareness and Connection

As the SoCal ASLA Chapter President, my primary focus is on fostering a culture of awareness and connection within our community. It is my firm commitment to articulate messages that not only raise awareness, but also strengthen the bonds that tie us together as landscape architects.

In our pursuit of advocacy, we stand as a beacon of enlightenment, championing the causes that matter most to our profession. I envision our chapter as a bridge, connecting not only our diverse members, but also reaching out to allied professional communities. By actively engaging with other disciplines, we amplify our impact and contribute to the broader conversation surrounding the importance of landscape architecture.

Recognizing the changing tides of our professional landscape, I have initiated efforts to acknowledge the transition of generations within our community. It is vital to celebrate the achievements and contributions of those who have shaped our profession, serving as inspirations to us all. Simultaneously, we must focus on nurturing and guiding the next wave of leaders. This involves creating platforms for mentorship and knowledge transfer, ensuring the continuous growth and evolution of our field.

Being one of the oldest and most substantial chapters within ASLA, we face the challenge of balancing our outreach efforts. The geographical diversity of our membership requires strategic planning in the location of programs and events. Our Board is dedicated to addressing this challenge by ensuring that our initiatives are accessible and beneficial to all members. Through a thoughtful approach, we aim to create a harmonious blend of programs that cater to the diverse needs and interests of our chapter.

In fostering awareness and connection, I encourage open communication among our members. By providing a platform for dialogue, we create an environment where ideas can flourish, collaborations can thrive, and the collective voice of Southern California landscape architects can resonate. Together, we will continue to build a vibrant and interconnected community that not only celebrates our past but also propels us confidently into a dynamic future.

Looking forward, SoCal ASLA remains steadfast in its commitment to being a professional platform that supports your advancement and development in your career.  I plan to work closely with dedicated and very talented members of the SoCal ASLA Executive Committee, the California Council of ASLA, Committee Chairs, numerous individual members, invaluable volunteers, and, not least, the student Chapters.

It is essential to recognize and express my sincere gratitude to all our sponsors for their unwavering support. Your dedication and contributions are integral to the success and vitality of our shared mission, and I look forward to working collaboratively with each of you.

Our aim is to continue providing opportunities for growth, fostering meaningful connections, and promoting excellence in our shared passion for landscape architecture. Together, let’s embrace the future with enthusiasm, knowing that our collective efforts contribute not just to open spaces, but to the vibrant stories that shape our communities and the world.

Sincerely,

Hongjoo Kim, ASLA, Chapter President
